Not Your Father’s MR2 – The 1993 Toyota MR2 Base

There have been several award-winning cars from Toyota over the years, including the Toyota MR2 of 1993. There are two trim levels to the MR2, including Base and Turbo. The Base version is one of the more popular options, outselling other configurations. Like in 1992 the popular 2.2 liter has made this a popular choice for coupe buyers nationwide.

1993 Toyota MR2 Base Specs

The restyled MR2 Base is equipped with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The engine is mated to a Toyota four-speed transaxle. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 1992 version.

The fuel system for the 1993 MR2 is a MPI design, using gasoline fuel. The fuel flow is controlled by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The fuel capacity of the fuel tank is 14.30 gallons.

The MR2 uses power-assisted brakes, with Non-ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a manual-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

Statistics

The MR2 is 164.20 inches long, 66.90 inches wide, and 48.60 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 94.50 inches. It is able to seat 2 comfortably.

The listed retail price in 1993 (MSRP) was $18,948, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-high price. This price is in line with the industry average price for a two-door Coupe.

The standard warranty period for the MR2 is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. There is also a warranty on the powertrain for 36* months or 50,000* miles respectively. This is standard in the coupe market.

Fuel Efficiency

The MR2 Base received a miles-per-gallon rating of 21 - 22 in-city driving and 28 - 29 when it came to highway driving. Being a gas-powered non-hybrid car, this was within normal parameters.

Parting Shots

The 1993 model year was very successful for the Toyota MR2. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the Base version) meant that buyers could find the version that best suited their needs.

I’m liking Hyundai over Toyota. It think it’s the difference in reliability. My first MR2 worked quite well, but the second one (a Base BTW) didn’t fare so well…
