Not Your Father’s MR2 – The 1995 Toyota MR2 Turbo

The Toyota MR2 is a 2-door car available at your Toyota dealer. The MR2 came in two configurations: Base and Turbo. The Turbo configuration is powered by the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 27 highway miles and 20 city. The MR2 competes in the Coupe market segment, in direct competition with Honda.

Toyota MR2 Engine Specs

The restyled MR2 Turbo is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The engine is mated to a Toyota five-speed transaxle. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 1994 version.

The fuel system for the 1995 MR2 is a traditional MPI, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 14.30 gallons.

The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The MR2 uses power-assisted brakes, with Non-ABS support. Load balancing is provided by coil front springs and coil in the rear.

Vehicle Statistics

The dimensions of the MR2 Turbo are 66.90 inches wide by 164.20 inches long. It sits 48.60 inches off the ground. It seats a standard two passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 94.50 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $29,238 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-high price. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Coupe.

The standard warranty period for the MR2 is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. There is also a warranty on the powertrain for 36* months or 50,000* miles respectively. This is standard in the coupe market.

Fuel Efficiency

The 1995 MR2 gets 27 miles/gallon on the highway and only 20 in the city. This is subpar for a coupe car.

What We Think of the Toyota MR2

The 1994 model began the promise of the Toyota MR2. The 1995 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Toyota hopes that the MR2 Turbo will continue to be a profitable vehicle.

I saw the recent news about Toyotas and their reliability. I personally would check out web sites like edmunds.com and others before I made a choice of a car like the MR2.

No less than 5 of my friends have a MR2. I can’t say more than two of them are happy with it…
