Impressions of the Mazda RX-7 for 1995

The 1995 RX-7 is an important vehicle to Mazda for the coupe market segment. The Base is a member of a series of three trim levels for the RX-7 which include Base, R2, and Touring. The two-door car with its rear-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for Mazda. There is strong competition from vehicles from Infiniti.

Engine Performance

The RX-7 Base is equipped with a Mazda 1.3 liter two-cylinder engine that utilizes 12 valves. The engine is mated to a Jatco 4-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Mazda.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The RX-7 has power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

RX-7 Base Statistics

The dimensions of the RX-7 Base are 68.90 inches wide by 168.50 inches long. It sits a comfortable 48.40 inches off the ground. It seats a standard two passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 95.50 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $37,800 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-average price. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Coupe.

Fuel Efficiency

The 1995 RX-7's normal fuel system runs on gas. The fuel is regulated electronically, with a fuel-injected multi-port fuel injection (MFI) style of design. The fuel capacity of the car is 20.10 gallons.

The RX-7 Base received a miles-per-gallon rating of seventeen in-city driving and 24 - 25 when it came to highway driving. Being a gas-powered non-green car, this was within normal parameters.

Parting Shots

There are several reasons why the Mazda RX-7 Base sold well in 1995. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Mazda, specifically a RX-7.
